Oily and greasy carpet stains: what to do before booking a clean
A greasy patch needs more than repeated scrubbing. Keep track of the spill and avoid unnecessary saturation.

The short answer
For an oily spill, avoid rubbing and do not pour household solvents onto the carpet. Record the source and previous treatments, limit traffic over the area and request advice for the carpet type. A greasy deposit and permanent discolouration are different problems.
Explain where the oil came from
Cooking oil near a dining table, food grease beside a sofa and oil brought in on footwear create different enquiries. Tell the cleaner what was spilled and whether there are several affected areas. If the substance is unknown, say so rather than guessing.
Note when it happened and whether the patch is sticky, dark or spread across a walking route. A photograph taken from the doorway helps show its position. A second close-up helps show the extent without losing the wider context.
Keep the first response simple
The Carpet and Rug Institute advises prompt attention, gentle blotting of liquids and avoiding rubbing. Its guidance also explains that solvent contact with the carpet backing can cause damage. That is why pouring a household degreaser or solvent into a stain is not a sensible shortcut.
Avoid repeated soaking or mixing products. If you have already applied washing-up liquid, a spot cleaner or another remedy, explain exactly what you used. A patch containing a previous treatment may need different consideration from the original spill alone.
Think beyond the visible patch
A stain may sit within a generally soiled room. Ask whether a local treatment or a wider clean is appropriate rather than assuming one small patch should be treated in isolation. The answer depends on the carpet, its condition and the likely result.
A dark area is not always entirely removable soil. Wear, old staining and colour changes can overlap. A useful quote conversation separates the cleaning work from promises about an exact finished colour. Explain the outcome you hope for and ask about any limitations.
Prepare for an agreed visit
Send Ultra Clean the room details, postcode and spill history. Mention stairs, hallways or other rooms that also need attention so the job can be scoped together. Do not hide a stain beneath furniture before the cleaner has had a chance to see it.
Current standard prices are held on our price page. Confirm any specific stain work and the full area before booking. After cleaning, follow the drying guidance and ask about ongoing maintenance for the carpet you have, rather than adding another product immediately.
Common questions
Can I pour a degreaser onto carpet?
Do not assume a household degreaser is carpet-safe. Material compatibility, concentration and contact with the backing matter. Ask for advice before adding it.
Why does an oily patch look dirty again?
A recurring mark needs assessment of the spill, previous products and the surrounding carpet. Tell the cleaner about the recurrence rather than repeatedly treating it yourself.
Talk to us about your clean
Send your postcode, photographs and any care-label information. Tell us what happened and which products have already been used so we can discuss the next step.
