Ink and shoe polish stains: why a careful assessment matters
Strong colour, spreading marks and previous treatments: what to tell a professional before another attempt.

The short answer
Ink and shoe polish can leave difficult colour-bearing marks. Avoid scrubbing or experimenting with solvents, identify the product if possible and ask for an assessment. Treatment suitability and the chance of improvement depend on the stain and the material.
Identify the product before adding anything
Tell the cleaner whether the ink came from a ballpoint pen, felt-tip marker or another source. For shoe polish, keep the tin or bottle and note its colour and form. These details help distinguish problems that may look similar in a photograph.
The University of Georgia’s textile guidance distinguishes between different inks and warns that permanent inks can be particularly difficult. That is a reason to set expectations carefully, not an invitation to work through increasingly strong products at home.
Why scrubbing can make assessment harder
A small mark is easier to describe before it has been spread or covered with several treatments. Avoid rubbing, and keep other people from walking through the area. Do not use hairspray, bleach or a household solvent as an automatic first response.
If you already tried something, save the product details. Tell us whether the mark grew, changed colour or left a ring. Previous attempts are part of the cleaning history; knowing about them helps avoid guessing what is now in the carpet or upholstery.
Ask about the deposit and the remaining colour
A cleaner may be able to reduce some deposited material without removing all visible colour. An older mark may also have wear or damage around it. These possibilities need a conversation before you decide whether treatment is worthwhile.
Shoe polish and ink are not grounds for a universal promise of complete stain removal. A close-up can show the size and shape, but it cannot confirm the fibre, dye stability or everything beneath the surface. Include a wider photograph and the item’s care information wherever possible.
How to send Ultra Clean a useful enquiry
Send your postcode, the item affected, the product name, when the mark appeared and a record of any cleaning attempts. If the stain affects a rental property or a particular deadline matters, mention the timing so availability can be discussed before you rely on a visit.
We can then discuss the concern and the scope of the work. Consult the carpet or upholstery service page for the general service and the price list for current standard rates. Specialist concerns should be agreed individually; a basic rate is not a guaranteed stain-removal result.
Common questions
Should I use hairspray to remove ink?
Do not assume a household remedy is suitable for your carpet or upholstery. Stop adding products and seek advice matched to the material and ink.
Will black shoe polish definitely come out?
No result can be promised without assessment, and some colour may remain even if deposited material is reduced.
