Carpet and sofa odour removal: find the cause before adding fragrance
A fresh scent and solving an odour problem are different goals. Start with the history of the smell.

The short answer
Odour removal starts with identifying the source and how far it extends. Cleaning a suitable carpet or sofa may help with surface soiling, but fragrance alone does not resolve an underlying problem. Recurring smells or moisture concerns need individual assessment.
Describe the pattern, not just the smell
Does the smell come from one cushion, one patch of carpet or the whole room? Did it begin after a spill, a pet accident or a previous clean? Does it return when the room is closed? Write down those details before masking it with a spray.
Tell Ultra Clean about any treatment already applied, including deodoriser, disinfectant or a hired cleaning machine. Explain whether the area is currently damp. This helps distinguish a routine cleaning enquiry from a problem that may involve material beneath the visible surface.
Why the surface may not tell the whole story
The NCCA notes that retained moisture and longer drying of underlay can contribute to smells after cleaning. A smell returning after the face of a carpet appears dry is therefore useful information, not something to ignore while adding more perfume.
A cleaner cannot assess every hidden layer from a photograph. If there is an unresolved leak or persistent damp, explain that before booking a normal clean. Cleaning visible fibres is not a substitute for correcting the source of continuing moisture or assessing damaged underlying materials.
Discuss pet accidents honestly
Tell us where accidents occurred, whether they happened repeatedly and whether the item was saturated. Mention affected cushions or a pet’s regular resting place. This is practical information for setting the scope and expectations; you do not need to disguise the cause.
Do not assume that a routine carpet or upholstery clean includes every possible pet-odour treatment. Ask what can be assessed and what is included in the quote. An old or recurring concern may have limitations that should be discussed before work begins.
Agree the purpose of any deodorising treatment
Ultra Clean’s process includes discussion of optional deodorising where appropriate. Ask whether a proposed treatment addresses the concern you described or provides a finishing scent. Mention fragrance preferences before the visit so they can be considered.
Afterwards, follow the item-specific drying and ventilation guidance. If an unusual smell persists or returns, contact the cleaner with the timing and location rather than repeatedly soaking the same spot. A useful follow-up explains what changed and when, which helps decide the next step.
Common questions
Will deodoriser permanently remove every bad smell?
No. The source and extent of contamination matter. A finishing fragrance is not a guarantee that an underlying odour problem has been resolved.
Should I mention pet accidents before booking?
Yes. Share the affected areas, any repeated accidents and previous treatments so the scope and likely limitations can be discussed.
Talk to us about your clean
Send your postcode, photographs and any care-label information. Tell us what happened and which products have already been used so we can discuss the next step.
